What is astropsychology? Where the birth chart meets psychology

Astropsychology reads the birth chart as a map of temperament, needs and patterns, not a forecast. Here is what it is, what it isn't and how it can help.

Most people meet astrology through horoscopes: a few lines about the week ahead for everyone born under the same sign. Astropsychology starts somewhere else. It treats the birth chart as a map of a person: their temperament, their emotional needs and the patterns they tend to repeat, especially under stress.

Understanding astrology through a psychological lens

A birth chart is a picture of the sky at the moment and place you were born. Astrology describes the parts of that picture, from your Sun and Moon to your rising sign, elements and planets. Astropsychology asks a psychological question of each part: what does this say about how you think, feel, connect and grow?

The idea is not new. The psychiatrist Carl Jung was curious about astrology as a language of symbols and personality. In the twentieth century, writers such as Dane Rudhyar and later Liz Greene developed what became known as humanistic and psychological astrology, which focuses on inner life rather than prediction.

What astropsychology is not

  • It is not fortune-telling. It does not predict events or tell you what will happen.
  • It is not a diagnosis. It does not replace therapy, medical care or a professional assessment.
  • It does not define who you are. Your birth chart describes tendencies, not fixed rules. Your experiences, choices and personal growth all shape who you become. Even people born under the same sign can have very different personalities and ways of experiencing the world.

How it can help

Used well, astropsychology gives you a vocabulary for things that are hard to put into words. It can help you notice why some situations drain you and others light you up, what you reach for when you feel threatened, and which strengths you may be underusing. That kind of language makes self-reflection easier, and conversations with the people you love gentler.

It is also useful in relationships. When a partner, child or friend has a very different temperament, seeing that difference laid out can turn frustration into curiosity: they are not doing it to you; they are experiencing the world differently.

How Guide from the Stars uses astropsychology

Every Guide from the Stars is written by Catalina Ortiz, a licensed psychotherapist. She reads each chart the way she would think about a client: as a whole person with gifts, tensions and room to grow. Each guide is written by hand using your exact date, time and place of birth, translating the language of your chart into a personalized portrait that helps you better understand yourself, embrace your strengths and navigate your challenges.

Where to start

The simplest place to begin is your Sun sign, the core of your identity in the chart. Our free Sun sign guides cover your light, your shadow and your soul lesson in seven illustrated pages. When you want the whole picture, the personality guide reads your full chart.
